Sta. Maria was formerly known as Santa Maria de Pandi. It was first established as a barrio of Bocaue in the early 17th century before becoming an independent municipality on November 26, 1793 with the help of a Spanish friar named Francisco Dominguez Javier. At present, Sta. Maria is the 5th most populated municipality in the Philippines with a total population of more than 250,000. Santa Maria’s Central Business District, is composed of three (3) highly urbanized barangays namely Poblacion, Bagbaguin, and Santa Clara. It is one of the biggest and busiest commercial centers in the province as it is responsible for more than half of all economic activities in the municipality. It is also one of Bulacan’s leading financial centers. And because many workers are employed by big businesses in the area, the need for social security is more essential now than ever.
