SSS Membership

First of all, before you can be a member of SSS or Social Security System, you must first be employed in an occupation subject to and reported for SSS coverage before you can become a bonafide SSS member which is a lifetime membership. Under Section 24 of the SS Law, employers must require job applicants to present a valid SSS number before they can be considered for employment. The contributions that your employer remit become savings for the future and will serve as the basis for for your SSS benefits in times of contingencies. Membership cannot be withdrawn and contributions paid cannot refunded and issuance of an SSS number does not immediately qualify you for SSS coverage or benefits.

For those who are separated from employment, self-employed, overseas Filipino worker, or non-working spouse, you may choose to become an SSS Voluntary Member and continue paying your SSS voluntary contribution. In case of re-employment with the public sector wherein you will be covered under the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), you may still continue paying your SSS contributions as a voluntary member so that you can enjoy social security benefits under both institutions.

SSS Contribution Rates and Schedule of Payments

The monthly contributions for employees in the private sector are based on the monthly salary of each SSS member. At present, the monthly SSS contribution rate for employees is 11% of their monthly salary credit not exceeding P16,000 and wherein the employer will shoulder 7.37% and the employee with shoulder 3.63%. The schedule of payment to SSS of your monthly contributions is based on the 10th digit of your employer’s I.D. number.

For Self-employed and voluntary members, the 11% monthly salary credit will be based on their monthly earnings as declared at the time of their registration as self employed or voluntary member of the Social Security System and the prescribed payment schedule of SSS remittance is based on the last digit of your SSS number. SSS contribution for self-employed and voluntary members can be monthly or quarterly basis (every 3 months) which ends on the last day of March, June, September, and December. For quarterly sss remittances, any payment for 1, 2, or 3 months are accepted.

For Overseas Filipino Workers, the schedule of payment of your SSS contributions for January up to December of any given year may be paid within the same year but there is an option wherein you can pay your SSS member contribution for the months of October to December on the 31st of January the following year.

For SSS member loans, payments should be made every month and the exact date of monthly loan payment is based on the last digit of your SS I.D. number.
